News from the ScreenACT Office

On Screen in Singapore

For the first time, ScreenACT has undertaken export related activity for the film and television sector in the ACT and region. In partnership with Austrade and BusinessACT, ScreenACT invited businesses in the film and television sector in the ACT and region to participate in On Screen in Singapore (OSIS) from 30 November to 2 December 2005.

OSIS includes the Asia Television Forum and the Asia Film Market and Conference. It brings together international content providers and Asian buyers and partners. Last year 164 sellers and close to 500 buyers from 41 countries participated in this event.

Seven local businesses have registered to attend and will participate as an ACT delegation with the support of Austrade and ACT Government.

Capital Region

Tour of the Capital Region

A Capital Region and Snowy Mountains Film and Television Tour will take place in late October 2005 with a group of writers, producers, directors and location managers from Sydney travelling to a number of locations throughout the region. The tour will take in Goulburn, Canberra, Merimbula, Candelo, Nimmitabel and Jindabyne. ScreenACT and the National Capital Authority will host a function for the group while they are in Canberra to promote ACT locations and capabilities of the local film sector.

The Tour is a NSW Government initiative organised and funded by the Department of State & Regional Development and the NSW Film & Television Office and is the fifth of its type in NSW. ScreenACT’s Robert Pickles will accompany the tour in his role as Regional Production Liaison Officer.


Local Announcements

Electric Shadows and Dendy Cinemas Combine

Electric Shadows cinema will be working with independent cinema group, Dendy Cinemas, to establish a new multi-screen cinema complex in the Section 84 Development on Bunda Street, Canberra City. The cinema complex, expected to open late in 2006, will have nine screens and will program a wide selection of ‘alternative’ art-house films as well as the best of mainstream releases. In the meantime, Electric Shadows will continue as usual at its current venue.

Canberra Filmmaker makes finals of Home Brewed

Canberra filmmaker Tim Lear has made the finals of the 0-10 minute category of the Home Brewed International Film Festival. Tim and his film “Date with Death” stand to win $4,000 cash. One of Australia’s major film festivals, Home Brewed will be screening at Canberra Shorts on Thursday, 3 November 2005 from 8pm. So go along and support one of the ACT filmmakers and celebrate his success, while enjoying the best short films served up in Canberra this year. Animation Series to Screen at Canberra Shorts

SNOWYfest Canberra Shorts and the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) have formed an alliance for the screening of a specially commissioned series of student animations. Screening at each Canberra Shorts in 2006, the alliance will provide the students with hands on experience working to a client’s brief, while showcasing the great work being done at AIE.

Canberra Filmmakers Win Science Festival Awards

Scinema Science Film Festival

Congratulations to two Canberra Filmmakers, Matthew Higgins who won Best Film at Scinema 2005 for his nature documentary, “What’s Happening at Number 99?” and James Hunter who won The Secondary Schools Competition for his documentary “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Physics”. An Evening of CANBERRA SHORTS

CANBERRA SHORTS are held the FIRST THURSDAY OF EVERY MONTH

Australian filmmaking and cinephile legend and Canberra local Andrew Pike will be doing a short talk on Finding Your Voice as a Filmmaker at the October edition of SNOWYfest Canberra Shorts. The evening will feature a diverse range of great short films, plus the usual movie trivia hosted by Brendan Sloane.

Entry is free with the usual giveaways of beer, movie magazines, and double passes to Electric Shadows. Canberra Shorts welcomes the submission of short films from ACT filmmakers and will screen (almost) anything.
