Workshop: Running Your Own Creative Business: March 4-6 Canberra

AFTRS' Centre for Screen Business and ScreenACT would like to offer you the opportunity to attend 'Running your own creative business' from 4-6 March 2009 in Canberra.

About the course:

Running your own creative business is a three day course.
In the early 1990s Monica Davidson developed the course because she desperately needed to do a course like it. She was finding the business of freelancing increasingly complicated, and suffered through a number of so-called business courses that were helpful in part, but hardly the comprehensive coverage she needed.

Course structure:

Business:
How to set yourself up, including the truth about business plans, getting an ABN and registering a business name.

Money: Managing your finances, both personal and business. Figuring out what to charge for your work, and the difficulties involved in getting some clients to pay. Plus, the hardest trick of all - making your irregular income last in the tough times and planning for the future.

Tax 1: The necessary evils of understanding the GST and how it really applies to you. Also, working with PAYG so you don't end up in tax debt. You'll also get a look at a real Business Activity Statement and go through how to fill it out step-by-step.

Tax 2: The awful and boring essentials of income tax, including the various obscure tests and special considerations for creative people. How to prove you're in business and not a hobbyist.
The Law: copyright and contracts. We also look at moral rights, sedition and defamation. Learn how to avoid expensive lawyers, rely on your common sense, and trust your gut instincts. Includes real-life examples of contracts.

Marketing: All the essentials are here, with detailed information about all the inexpensive tricks of marketing that you can use for yourself. We also take a detailed look at the our secret weapon - word of mouth.

About the presenter:
Monica Davidson has been a trainer for 14 years. As well as Freelance Success she has written and led a number of different courses, primarily in film and writing. Nineteen years after her first freelance job, Monica has over 100 credits to her name as a producer, director and cinematographer, and has had her writing published in over a dozen magazines and websites both here and overseas.

Local short film selected for competition in Europe

Bearcage Productions' short film Shockwaves has been selected for competition in the prestigious International Tampere Film Festival in Finland. Shockwaves is the only Australian film to have gained selection this year, in a festival classified by Screen Australia as one of the world's most prestigious short film festivals.

"This year three thousand films were submitted" according to Serge Ou, the film's director, "and only sixty-nine were selected, so the competition was tough."

Bearcage Productions Managing Director, Michael Tear, who produced the film, stressed the magnitude of this achievement. "The Tampere Film Festival has been running for thirty-nine years and is one of Europe's largest and most important festivals," he said, "as well as awarding prizes for Best Animation, Best Fiction and Best Documentary, the Festival nominates its winning film for the European Film Awards".

According to Serge Ou, the themes of the film may explain its appeal to an
international jury, "the issues we deal with in twenty minutes include shock jock radio, immigration, small town isolation and domestic violence, themes that are globally relevant."

Shockwaves was written by Bearcage script writer, Michael Cove with edit, design and audio design carried out in-house. Cast, crew and locations were all sourced from the Canberra region with the exception of the lead role, played by noted Sydney actor Tony Barry.

Shockwaves will be screened at the Tampere Film Festival from 4-8 March 2009 with Australian screenings to follow. For more see www.bearcage.com.au

Screen Australia invites industry feedback on Marketing Support and Promotion, and Research and Statistics

Screen Australia has called for submissions from industry practitioners on its Marketing, Support and Promotion and Research and Statistics areas.

A terms of reference paper outlining all programs and activities currently undertaken by Marketing, Support and Promotion and Research and Statistics has been released to assist the consultation process.

Industry practitioners are invited to comment on individual program elements, as well as on overall direction for each area. Feedback is sought on what functions are critical or what alternative functions should be considered. Respondents may wish to propose new ways of doing things and/or indicate which aspects have proven useful and worthy of priority, versus those that might be wound down or amended. Suggestions are of most value when they take account of proposals that are feasible for a Commonwealth government agency with a finite budget.

The terms of reference and further information regarding the review can be downloaded from

www.screenaustralia.gov.au/stage2

Submissions are invited until COB Wednesday 18 February 2009.
